Qantas passengers will soon be able to take to the skies in the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and one will have a uniquely Western Australian feel.

'Quokka' has made the final cut in a competition to name the eight new aircraft, after more than 60,000 suggestions were received.

The final names are as follows:
Quokka
Great Barrier Reef
Boomerang
Skippy
Waltzing Matilda
Uluru
Great Southern Land
Dreamtime

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the public response to the challenge of naming the aircraft after things that captured the spirit of Australia was fantastic.

“There were some clear favourites and it’s given us a good mix of names for our eight Dreamliners, from landmarks to native animals, literature and Indigenous heritage,” Mr Joyce said.

'Vegemite' was a suggestion which didn't make the cut, while Qantas blackballed 'Yeah Nah' and 'Chiko Roll' early on.

The names will be painted beneath the cockpit window on each aircraft.
