Fishermen Escape Flaming Vessel

Rescue in the Gascoyne

Fishermen Escape Flaming Vessel Australian Maritime Safety Authority

A bulk carrier has collected two fisherman who were adrift in a life raft, after their boat caught fire.

The pair sent out a distress beacon around 2:20am this morning, while their raft drifted about 40 kilometres west of Lake Macleod.

A number of vessels were alerted to the situation but it was bulk carrier Ikan Senyur, which arrived to help them just after 5:00am.

The Ikan Senyur launched a rescue boat, brought them onboard and offered them a medical assessment.

AMSA’s Search and Rescue Manager Alan Lloyd said the men were lucky to be alive.

“By activating their distress beacon, these men were able to alert us to their situation immediately,” Mr Lloyd said.

“I’d like to thank the crew of the Ikan Senyur for responding to our request for assistance.

“Every minute counts in search and rescue, and often the best-placed people to respond to a distress situation are those nearby.”
