Ever wondered whose crazy idea it was to swim from Cott to Rotto?
It always starts with one, right? And the one in question, according to reports, was a German bloke named Gerd von Dincklage-Schulenburg.
Turns out Gerd was drinking with some mates at the Quokka Arms, Rotto’s famous watering hole, celebrating Christmas with cheer. Gerd was spending up when one of his mates warned him about the real possibility of not having enough cash to get back to the mainland.
Gerd replied famously, “then I’ll swim”.
True to his word, some days later, Gerd organised a crew and took off from North Mole in Freo.
9 hours and 45 minutes later, an exhausted Gerd was chaired up to the Quokka Arms, where we’re pretty certain he didn’t buy a beer all night.
