10,000 young Aussies currently receiving welfare payments will be offered jobs in the retail sector, under a new plan to be announced by the Turnbull government.

The Australian Retailers Association have reportedly agreed to help find positions for young people aged 15 to 24 who have been on welfare for more than six months.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull believes the announcement is great news for young jobseekers and "reaffirms our successful steps to get Australians into work".

ARA boss Russel Zimmerman said underprivileged youths were now getting access to the same opportunity as some of Australia's most successful business people who started out on the retail shop floor, AAP reports.

The announcement comes just a day after thousands of Aussie workers were left with smaller pay packets thanks to a decision to cut Sunday penalty rates.
