Counter-terrorism police have arrested a second person in relation to an attack at Buckingham Palace over the weekend, in which a driver swerved at police officers near the palace and then produced a four-foot sword.

The second man has been arrested under belief that he played some role in the preparation, commission or instigation of terror, with the Scotland Yard treating the incident as an act of terrorism.

The incident occurred on Friday evening local time.

"A Blue Toyota Prius deliberately drove at a marked police vehicle and stopped in front of it," Met Police said.

"Uniformed officers then confronted that vehicle and during that confrontation, the driver reached for a four-foot sword that was in the passenger footwell.

"CS gas was used as a part of the arrest and during the struggle the individual repeatedly shouted the words 'Allahu Akbar'.

"The individual was quickly brought under control. He's a 26 year-old male from the Luton area and is now in custody at a central London police station.

"Three officers were injured as a result of the incident."
