Put Down That Beer! This Is How Much Fruit & Vegetables You Should Tuck Into

For years and years we've been told we should eat five serves of fruit and vegetables each day to help stay healthy. 

Now scientists say that's not enough to stop us from dying early!

Whilst even 2.5 portions of fruit and veggies can lower your chance of heart disease, stroke, cancer and premature death, health experts in the UK say 10 serves a day could prevent 7.8 million premature deaths worldwide every year.

The findings come from Imperial College London, who say most adults struggle to even manage three or four portions a day.

Eating up to 800 grams of fruit and vegetables – equivalent to 10 portions and double the recommended amount in the UK – has been associated with a 24% reduced risk of heart disease, a 33% reduced risk of stroke, a 28% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, a 13% reduced risk of total cancer, and a 31% reduction in premature deaths, according to Imperial College.

But don't be fooled into thinking all fruit and veg are created equal.

Apples and pears, citrus fruits, salads and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and chicory, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are what we should eat the most of because they are considered best at preventing heart disease and stroke.

So what does 10 serves or 800gms look like:

2 Kiwifruit

1 Apple

1/2 Grapefruit

1 Pear

8 Cauliflower florets

1 Glass orange juice

3 Tablespoons of peas

2 Broccoli spears

1 Tomato

1 Banana
