Barnaby Joyce may be on annual leave this week, but he's still making headlines following his affair scandal with a former staffer.

The latest Newspoll published today has found that an overwhelming majority of Aussie voters believe the Deputy PM should resign as leader of the Nationals, they're not happy with the Prime Minister's handling of the situation either.

More than 1,600 voters were surveyed, 65 per cent believe Barnaby should step down, while a third reckon he should hang in the political towel altogether.

Malcolm Turnbull's approval rating has also taken a hit, dropping five points to 40 percent.

The PM discussed the scandal on 60 Minutes on Sunday night, saying the pair met in Sydney over the weekend to speak face-to-face after a few heated exchanges. He said it's not up to him to give Barnaby the boot.

"He is a partner in government, he's a minister in my government, he's the deputy prime minister, he's the leader of the Nationals. I just want to be very careful, because there has been a tendency for people to suggest that I am trying to influence the Nationals, I absolutely am not," he said.

Turnbull also revealed he consulted his wife Lucy, before announcing a ban on politicians engaging in sexual relations with their staff.

"The minister could be the most eligible bachelor or young woman in the country and be absolutely free in terms of who they can have relations with. But if they're a minister in my government, they cannot have sexual relations with their staff."
