A Pakistani man has been sentenced to death, found guilty of committing blasphemy via a Facebook post.

Taimoor Raza was arrested last year accused of posting derogatory content about Sunni Muslim leaders and the wives of prophet Mohammed.

Under Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws, anyone accused of insulting God, Islam or other religious personalities can be sentenced to death.

Raza is the country's first person to be convicted on charges over social media activity.

The government has launched a crackdown to rid social media of anything negative about Islam. It's also petitioned the owners of Facebook and Twitter, asking them to ID any Pakistanis who have posted offensive material.

In recent weeks, millions of people have been receiving text messages from the government warning them against sharing the content online.

The man's lawyer has now come out saying they'll appeal the conviction.
