Senior Republican senator John McCain has been diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer, a statement from his office has said.

McCain had surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain when a tumour was discovered.

US correspondent for The AustralianCameron Stewart, said that Australia has 'no closer ally in Washington' than McCain.

He secured the Republican nomination in 2008 where he was defeated by Barack Obama in the general election.
