George Calombaris has copped a $1000 fine over an assault charge at the A-League grand final in Sydney earlier this year.

Calombaris, who is best known as one of MasterChef's judges, pleaded guilty to assaulting a 19-year-old man back in May at the A-League grand final between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC.

Vision previously emerged of the 38-year-old approaching the man, calling him a "big-mouth man" and a "dodgy c**t" before punching him in the abdomen, the court had heard.

Magistrate Peter Miszalski said it was "a tragedy" to see someone of his profile in the courtroom.

"It was a very public display of aggression," he told the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

"I watched those programs many years ago and was very much a fan. To see a man like this come before the court is a tragedy."

Calombaris is a well-known Victory fan, and was their number one ticket holder until he stepped down from the role following the incident, banning himself from attending A-League games for 12 months.
