Flying Ubers Flagged For Sydney, Melbourne

"Cheaper than a car"

Flying Ubers Flagged For Sydney, Melbourne (Uber Elevate)

Eat your heart out, Jetsons family – Uber's unveiled new plans to take ride-sharing to new heights.

It's not even legal in every Australian state yet, but the company's considering both Sydney and Melbourne as potential candidates for an unprecedented project which would see Uber aircrafts fly us to our destination for less than it costs to run the family car.

"In Los Angeles and Sydney, residents spend seven whole working weeks each year commuting," reads the White Paper penned during the company's Elevate Summit.

"Just as skyscrapers allowed cities to use limited land more efficiently, urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground."

The paper by the Elevate program details a network of small, electric aircrafts that take off and land vertically (called VTOL) to enable "rapid, reliable transportation between suburbs and cities and, ultimately, within cities."

The design is simpler, quieter and more economic than a helicopter, its closest aerial cousin.

The company says factors like demand and the production of more crafts will drive down expenses in the long-term.

It could be here as early as 2023.
