Zuckerberg approves subscription trial

Facebook Groups To Introduce Membership Fees

You could soon be slugged with a membership fee to stay connected to your favourite Facebook groups, with boss Mark Zuckerberg attempting to monetise the platform by letting administrators charge a subscription.

The social network said the new feature would help financially support administrators and the work they do to engage communities. It's believed the charges for premium subgroups could range from $4.99 to $29.99 a month, depending on how exclusive the content is.

Members of parenting, cooking and home cleaning groups will be the first to be charged under a pilot program, but Facebook are yet to announce when that trial will officially start.

"As we learn from this pilot and understand how group members feel about subscription groups, we’ll continue to improve this experience to help admins offer more to their members and continue to invest in their communities," Facebook product director Alex Deve said in a blog post.

Currently, there are more than 600 million Facebook groups, with users able to join up to 6,000 groups at any one time.
