An explosive article in The Washington Post has described President Donald Trump's phone call with Malcolm Turnbull as 'tense' and 'vitriolic'.

The American newspaper claims that after speaking to 4 other world leaders throughout the day, the President's chat with our PM was his "worst call by far".

The phone call was expected to last an hour, but was abruptly ended after 25 minutes by Trump.

A lot of the tension surrounded a deal where the US had previously pledged to take in 1,250 refugees from an Australian detention centre.

“This is the worst deal ever,” Trump is claimed to have said.

The Washington Post reports:

“I don’t want these people,” Trump said. He repeatedly misstated the number of refugees called for in the agreement as 2,000 rather than 1,250, and told Turnbull that it was “my intention” to honor the agreement, a phrase designed to leave the U.S. president wiggle room to back out of the deal in the future, according to a senior U.S. official.

Trump was also reported to have spent a portion of the phone call 'bragging' about the scale of his election win and crowd sizes at his inauguration.
