United Airlines has been criticised for the death of a dog stored in an overhead compartment on board a flight from Texas to New York.

The 10-month-old French bulldog was flying with a woman and her two children in a carrier when a flight attendant reportedly asked for the dog carrier - and the dog - to be placed in the overhead compartment.

The passenger initially resisted but eventually complied, leaving the dog overhead for the three-hour journey.

Much to the distress of the dog's owner and passengers, who posted about it on social media, the dog was found dead when the plane touched down in New York.

United Airlines took "full responsibility" for the dog's death.

"This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin," a United spokesperson said.

"We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again."
