The Most Successful Melbourne Cup Barrier Revealed

When trying to pick a Melbourne Cup winner, people are looking for any sort of statistic that might point them in the right direction.

ABC put together a brilliant collection of data showing the statistics of past winners - and one of those includes the barrier draw.

Here is a graph showing which barriers have enjoyed the most success on Cup day:

So there you have it; the barrier draw has quite a random effect on the Melbourne Cup.

Barriers 26 and 18 have not seen a winner in the race's history since 1861. However, the Cup has not had 26 runners since 1968.

Japanese horse Curren Miriotic will be running out of barrier 18 tomorrow looking to overcome the curse.
