Octagonal Passes Away At 24
Champion racehorse Octagonal has been euthanised at Godolphin Woodlands today, aged 24.
The Kiwi-bred horse, affectionately known as The Big O, was still mentally sharp but was physically declining.
Octagonal was a 10 time Group 1 winner, including a famous victory as a three-year-old in the Cox Plate in 1995.
Trained by John Hawks and owned by Jack and Bob Ingham, The Big O is the last horse to win the triple crown — the Canterbury and Rosehill Guineas and the Australian Derby.
He was retired to stud in 1997, siring Lonhro who went on to win 11 Group 1 races and be named Australian Horse of the Year.
Octagonal will be buried at Woodlands.
