The 10 Biggest Quirks Of The Round 1 Fixture

Lots to digest.

There's always plenty to digest about the round one fixture, which was released earlier today.

It's packed with blockbusters in what's set to be an enthralling round of footy.

But there are plenty of oddities as well.

So what sticks out?

1. Carlton will play their ninth opening round fixture against Richmond on a Thursday night in the last 10 years.

The only outlier? When they played Richmond on a Thursday in round two instead, back in 2014.

2. Collingwood will play just their second round one MCG match in eight years.

Prior to that? They'd played 14 out of 15, from 1995 to 2009. Evened things up a little.

3. The Western Bulldogs will play just their fourth ever round one MCG match, and their third ever round one Friday night match.

Don't tell them about that Collingwood streak a few years back.

4. Sydney will open their season in Sydney for the sixth consecutive year.

There are three Sydney derbys in there, but it's still a decent run.

5. Port Adelaide will not feature on a Sunday in round one for just the second time in nine years.

Sunday specialists no more, as they travel to Sydney on Saturday.

6. North Melbourne will play their first match against West Coast in Victoria in six years.

North have played one home game against West Coast, down in Tasmania, but it's a long Victorian drought for the Roos.

7. Gold Coast will open their season at Metricon Stadium once again.

Only once in seven years have the Suns travelled interstate: back in 2015, when they played Melbourne at the MCG.

8. Essendon will play just their second MCG match in round one in 12 years.

While they're Etihad tenants, it's a long drought for one of the most followed clubs in the league.

9. Conversely, Hawthorn has featured at the MCG in round one in 15 of their last 20 round one fixtures.

It's probably not a line in the sand...fair contrast, though.

10. Melbourne will play just their third opening round fixture away from the MCG since 1999.
