Blackers Says Thanks Posted by Dan The Internut 29 January, 2010 - 8:38 AM

Help Blackers get better by sending him a message on Mix 94.5

Our very own Ian Blackley, recovering from a sudden heart attack suffered whilst on-air, sends his very own message of thanks to everyone for their well wishes and support during his recovery.

It's difficult to know exactly what to say after a wakeup call like that.

Unfortunately a wakeup call that far too many of us go through during our lives. Some don't get through it, some do. Luckily for me I did with the aid of some very talented medical staff. What an amazing team they are in those departments at Charlies. Thank you so much ladies and gentlemen.

But whichever way you look at it, I was caught sleeping on the job. I knew I had a family history. My father had a heart attack at the age of 45 that put him in intensive care for 6 weeks and had triple bypass surgery at 53. Was he overweight? No. Did he smoke? Never. Did he have more than the odd glass of red? Not on your life. In fact at the age of 40 he was still playing first grade cricket and tennis and played the occasional game of Rugby. Never been overweight a day in his life. When he had his heart attack though, he had a cholesterol level over 9. My mother's level was once over 8.

I started to keep an eye on things years ago but took my eye off the ball. 12 months late for my Stress Test, (which coincidentally was the morning after the attack), hadn't been taking my cholesterol lowering medication because I didn't like taking any type of pill, I was enjoying a little too much wine at times, not keeping enough of an eye on my weight, was once a smoker etc etc etc.

I exercise regularly and have a good diet but that's not enough if you're in the 'at risk category' which so many people are these days.

If you are in that category, please have a think about the last time you saw your doctor for tests and ask yourself, "what's my life like? What more can I do? Am I doing anything?"  From now on I certainly am. All the time too, not just when it suits and when I can fit it in.

After 3 trips to the hospital, 1 stent in my right coronary artery, 2 in my left, an allergic reaction to my meds and now a lifetime of taking pills to look forward too....... is it an experience I can recommend? Of course not! Don't buy a ticket, the ride's not worth it.

Ignoring the warning signs is like thinking about dying on the road. "It'll never happen to me".... believe me, it can.

From the bottom of my newly refurbished heart, thank you so much for your messages and calls. It does mean a lot to me.  I'm just so glad I'm here to read and hear them. Talk to you soon.

Ian
