The Coolest Thing You've Seen Post by: Lisa Fernandez 12 March, 2009 - 4:37 PM
Check out this photo of this guy we drove past on our travels. Here's an article that Benjamin Strick, journalist with the Northern Guardian Newspaper wrote about "Klaus".A man has made an astounding journey on foot from Alice Springs to Carnarvon with three companions - two camels and a blue heeler.
Towing a vehicle he found in a scrap yard a few years ago, Klaus, his two large friends Snowy and Willy, and Oscar the blue heeler are travelling around the upper half of Australia on an endless journey. Klaus left Alice Springs in April this year and has been grabbing the attention of tourists and locals with his eccentric caravan and travel mates.
"I don’t really care where I’m going, I’ve got no rush to get anywhere," Klaus told the Northern Guardian
"I might make a turn and head to the Kennedys and then work my way back up to Alice Springs," he said
Keeping up with modern technology, he installed two solar panels on the back of his van a few years ago to help him cook and boil water.
Klaus checks his messages when he arrives in towns. "I’ve got to check my emails and keep in touch with people," he said. He spent Sunday resting in the shade near the turn-off to the North West Coastal Highway and Robinson Street. His camels ate, slept and recuperate for another long, hard walk.
"Snowy and Willy are great company," Klaus said. "But Snowy does all of the work, Willy is a bit lazy," he said.
"My dog Oscar gets pretty tired whenever he walks because he likes to be in front of the whole group and he has got such small legs so he is the biggest sleeper of the lot."
This was a very cool sight for us... What's the coolest thing you've seen when travelling?

I travelled across the Nullabour years ago and we meet a guy who was running around Australia,he was travelling alone, he told us how he was trying to get sponsorship for his shoes becuase he was going through so many, but at the stage we meet him he had not been sponsored, we also meet a guy who was rollerblading arround Oz, it was really strange meeting these people in the middle of no where and in that heat. It made me appreciate our car so much even though we did not have air con.

G'day,we passed this guy way up north last year.Couldn't believe our eyes,I jumped out and asked him for a photo. He didn't want to stop and talk.Thought ,how great that must be just to bugger off into the great blue beyond..We wondered if he had just given up on the human race.He has the set up needed to survive in the outback..

My husband and two boys (12 & 14) did a road trip on the Great Central Road to Alice Springs last year and saw this remarkable guy, the camels and his dog half way between Uluru and the Olgas last April. He said he travels approx 16km/day and might take 12 months to get to Shark Bay. Amazing man - pleased he made it!
