Dynasty Talk Denied By Malthouse Post by: Dan The Internut 4 October, 2010 - 8:20 AM

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse has cast doubt over a potential Magpies dynasty less than 48 hours after he delivered the club its 15th VFL/AFL premiership.

The manner in which Collingwood emphatically disposed of St Kilda in the 2010 Grand Final Replay has led many to suggest that it may just be the first of a succession of black-and-white flags.

However Malthouse, who became the oldest premiership coach in history on Saturday at 57 years of age, said that it won’t be long before Collingwood’s hugely successful game style becomes obsolete.
If you cast your mind back, say four or five years, when Sydney and West Coast went head-to-head for those two years, they had a set agenda in the way they wanted to play,” Malthouse said on Monday.

“It worked beautifully for two years, a year later we came up against a side (Geelong) that just said, ‘nah, we’re not having the ball 300 times (per game), we’re going to get the ball 400 times’, and towards the end of last year they had it 500 times.”

“That worked for two or three seasons until this year probably everyone said it’s a little bit (of a case of) overuse we’ll get them some other way.”

“Every man has his mountain to climb and when you get there it looks good until the clouds clear and then you look across and there’s another one a bit taller.”

Malthouse might have just claimed his third flag as coach to go alongside his 1992 and 1994 successes with West Coast, but the veteran mentor didn’t enjoy the 2010 finals series at all.

He revealed the recently-completed finals campaign took an extremely big personal toll on him and has left him exhausted.

“Have I enjoyed the finals series? I said in one of the interviews ‘no’, and I haven’t,” Malthouse said.

“It hasn’t been a joyful four weeks, it’s been a very very tough four weeks. Mentally and physically I have been absolutely drained.”

“(But) now that we’ve won it, I’m certainly going to enjoy it because that’s what you work for.”

Can Collingwood win two or more premierships with this current crop of players?
