An horrific incident on Brisbane's southside this morning has seen a Council bus driver killed and 11 passengers injured.
Police have confirmed a man entered a stationary bus along Beaudesert Road near Mayfield Road at Moorooka and poured a flammable liquid on the driver before setting it alight.
A 48-year-old man is in police custody.
The driver was just 29-years-old.
11 passengers on board the bus were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. 6 people were transported to hospital.
Witnesses have hailed a passerby a hero, who reportedly ran to the scene from a nearby shop and kicked the back window in to help passengers escape.
"Words escape me. This is a horrific incident,"said Superintendant Jim Keogh.
"I've been confronted with many situations but here, this is a rate one, where there appears to be no apparant motive. None. It's not a robbery, we're not alleging a robbery. It's a senseless, needless taking of a young life of a person who's actually going about supporting the community by providing transport"
As far as terrorism, Superintendant Keogh says it's early days but they have looked at it and discarded it as a motive at this stage.
Inbound lands of Beaudeset Road remain closed with diversions in place, however, drivers are urged to avoid the area.
Police investigations are continuing at the scene.
