Your Say On Your City
The Critical Question Post by: Ian Blackley 9 March, 2009 - 11:43 AM
Well, well ,well. Hasn't the Daylight Saving debate stirred up a little, sorry......BIG hornets nest of opinion.I went for a walk this morning. 0645hrs. Why did I bother to take sunglasses? No idea, I was going to be back by 0730hrs. Still didn't need them.
My partner went for a run with a girlfriend at 0615hrs. Why didn't she wear a miners helmet? No idea, she was done by 0715hrs. Still could have used it.
I'm afraid I'm one of these, sorry, we're the type of people who enjoy DLS but also need light to enjoy a morning excursion. That's why we would say yes to it if it finished at the end of February. But March? Oh give me a break.
So I'd like you to let me know what you think.
- If DLS ended at the end of February would you vote Yes or No?
- If DLS ended at the end of March would you vote Yes or No?
- Should the State Govt. ask this question instead of just Yes or No on the subject?
To put this question to bed once and for all the State Govt. owes it to all of us to ask that question. Not just do we want it or not.
Ian's got another pertinent point on Daylight Saving. Have Your Say.
The Weird Excuses
The Bunch heard all sorts of excuses for and against Daylight Saving. Listen to them and tell us what you think.
Have Your Say
The blog has been going off, surely this is the biggest topic to hit Perth for some time?

Daylight saving is a croc, everybody knows it's just to keep up with the Eastern States. If business wish to keep up with the east let them change their working hours & not drag everyone into their Quagmire.

I would vote yes regardless as I love the extra daylight hours in the evening but given a choice I would prefer DLS finish at the end of February

I love daylight saving and wil be voting yes. The question should it finish earlier? should be included on the ballot paper. Why are people so against it? and don't give me "the curtains fade", "the cows don't milk" or "my kids don't sleep". Curtains don't fade, there is stii the same amount of daylight, farmers over east have done it for years and my kids go to bed at 7.30pm and go to sleep regardless.

The hornets nest to be sure.
As a person STILL WORKING, I enjoy the extra daylight hours to spend wirh my family... to go fishing or play with the kids in the park. To me that is a fairly valid reason!
Speaking to those opposed to the idea, I've yet to hear a valid reason for their negativity.... forget the "fading" and "milking" and "sleeping" issues that have become bar room jokes..... so come on guys put your valid opinions on the table.
Let's see the merit of what you have to say. There is a teaching that says "if you don't understand something, then say no. Is that possibly your valid reason?

I also go for a walk at 5am every day winter and summer, although I loved the light early morning I appreciate the light evenings much more. I think the additional question should be on the referendum paper. But I wll still vote yes

For those parents who have little children, remember these same kids grow up and with daylight saving it means you can do more with them after school, work, sport or whatever. Yes those of us who have to deal with the Eastern States find it a pain as it is but I sure as heck am not about to start my day at 6, I work enough hours as it is and thankfully with daylight saving, I get home when its light to do a few things I wouldnt be doing if it was dark. So bring on DLS!

I was up at 0645 yesterday and it was daylight - maybe these people who enjoy their morning excercise need to get their eyes checked? Comments about needing a miners helmet (for some torchlight I guess?, certainly not to protect their feeble brain) at 0730 would suggest their eyes need checking. So these people don't exercise in winter I guess.
So you want my business to operate according to eastern states time? That's fine, I assume you wont mind me closing my doors at 1400 then? Or will you have to forgo your morning exercise to visit my business at 0600 when it opens? Or are you quite happy for me to increase my prices across the board to cover the extra 3 hours pay I would have to pay all my staff in order to stay open until 1700?
Oh your biological clock is thrown out of whack? Ever had a poor nights sleep? Ever stayed up later than usual? Ever travelled to a different timezone? I am sure you are fully recovered from any of these traumatic events.
My kids go to be when I tell them to, it is called effective parenting! Even without daylight savings it is daylight outside when they go to bed in summer. And they still manage to awaken early in winter when it is still dark outside.
Am yet to hear an even slightly convincing argument against DLS!! Me? I don't care either way, I just want a logical debate based on fact not garbage arguments with no foundation!

CONT (PART 2) ....
And as for those who say we have already voted no........so by your logic we will never again vote on the republic issue since we have done so once already? Good thing we voted in favour of nationhood back at the start of the 1900s, otherwise we would never have voted on it again. Giving women the vote and Aboriginals the rights of citizens were also things Australia voted on - if they were no votes would we never have voted on them again?
How about the "I object to DLS because we were forced to have a trial" - so you would prefer all those who have never experienced it to make a totally uninformed choice? I like the way you think - by the way, I have a house I want to sell you ... what? you want to look at it first? nah just say yes ;-)

Vote YES for daylight savings. It is lovely to come home from work at 6pm and still be able to enjoy some sunshine before darkness falls. You see more and more people out and about in the evenings with day light savings. WA has to stop being stuck in the past and move forward with positive change!!
