Your Say On Your City

Mountains, Not Molehills Post by: Ian Blackley 16 March, 2009 - 11:32 AM

Just a footnote to my blog about the "question"...

It was pointed out that at 0645hrs it was daylight? What on earth was I on about?

Well, to give you an idea of what I mean and to add to the debate. Sunrise this morning was at 0716hrs. Daylight at 0645? Don't think so.

Think about this too as a few seem to be so interested in keeping up pace with the East (and I do understand completely about the business aspect and fair enough too). During the DLS adjustment on average the sunrise in Sydney is nearly 20 mins earlier than it is here in Perth and sunset the same. The sun rises over the ocean there and sets behind the Great Dividing Range which is the opposite to way things happen here.
The sun rise from behind our hills and sets over the ocean already giving us more light at night but also a later sunrise too.

If you'd actually like to give us the same day as the East then we only need to move our clocks forward only about half an hour in October not one hour. Something else to confuse a few people.

As I said, love it but it goes on too long and the question should be asked by the government.

Todays DLS times are:

Perth local time
sunrise 0716hrs
sunset  1935hrs

Sydney local time
sunrise 0655hrs
sunset  1912hrs

Do you agree or disagree...? Tell me and have your say.

Is the idea of dsl supposed to be in sync with the eastern states so why would you be dropping one month if its supposed to benefit business with the eastern states.
So cant see the point of dsl if business is supposed to benefit from all of this.
if dsl was to remain then it should start and end the same time as the eastern states.
Thought that was the original concept of dsl back years ago when it was first introduced.
Personally cant wait until its over and the referemdum has been and gone.
Got more now to worry about now and its called long term unemployment... ouch it hurts being out of work for soon long.... boredom is the worst.... cant spend money and enjoy dsl... stuck at home....

Perth time is actually taken from Kalgoorlie. It really doesn't have anything to do with mountains and oceans. As Kalgoorlie is east of Perth that is where the 20 minutes difference of daylight comes about. I love daylight savings even with the extra 20 minutes of daylight over the eastern states.

I think daylight saving sucks.. we are much hotter on average than the east coast.. we dont need extra evening daylight time.. by that time of day im way over the bloody sun to start with..
and it really stuffs up the time differences with the northern hempisphere.. anyone who does business with them there will be able to tell you all about that.. i have family in the USA and my 12 hours difference becomes 14 when we kick into daylight savings.
i think the govt should have just listened to the results of the last 2 polls and not wasted our taxpayers money trialling something that was voted out twice..

Daylight saving is a wonderful thing, not only for our physical and mental well being, but for our business as well. If you can't see the benefit in keeping the working hours closer to the Eastern states then you should think of all the times you have tried to call an institution for help with one of your services only to get a message telling you to call back the next day. You should also think of the extra time we all have to enjoy outdoor activities with family and friends. You can't honestly tell me you enjoy getting home just in time to watch the sun go down. And the heat argument is now beyond the joke! It is not hotter, you are simply home sooner.....I think it is a small price to pay for the extra time to enjoy home time....don't we all work to live...not the other way around!?!? To all the older generation who are against it, think of your children grandchildren who will be trying to do business with the MAJORITY of the rest of the country who are close to half a working day ahead of them!!! Please people, I wish the sense of it could be seen by all.....daylight saving is a very good thing, just like extended trading hours, our loveable but sleepy state needs to catch up with the rest of the country!!

I think DLS is great and the people who are against it are the reason for this state going backward if it is voted in. The benefits to families with young children getting more exercise and being able to sleep in the morning, instead of them rising when the cows get up, the bbq's in the evenings, walks. the pathetic excuses used such as faded curtains, cows milking earlier, the list goes on are such rubbish. The states that have DLS have hot weather, just look at the temps in melbourne for the bush fires, adelaide with it's heat waves and you reckon we have hot weather!! The northern parts of our state is where consistent hot weather is, but still in comparison with places like Mildura, Coober Pedy (Hottest place on earth)!!! So to the whingers about dls, just learn to deal with it and if it does get voted out don't come whingeing when you complain about the hot weather in the middle of the day (or was that 11am or 1pm)...

I find daylight saviings not practical, as the sea breeze comes in between 12:00 and 5:00pm and it can blow a gale, so for people who like to exercise or train outdoors, or even spend time at the beach it can be unpleasant, and if the sea breeze doesn't come in it can get very hot, so either way we dont get the so called benefit of daylight savings. Business have made do without it for the last few years and they have got bye, if they have to deal with companies in the USA or Europe they find a way, so what is the big deal?

    Mother's poiont of view.

The children are very tired because of the long hot summer. They cannot play outside until 5 pm. They get heat stroke and sunburn on really hot days. They wait for it to cool down and if they can go to the beach, it 's after mum or dad returns from work at 6pm. They can't stay more than an hour because they have school the next.day.

Then in the morning when finally the temperature is at its coolest I wake them up for school. No, Not all families have air conditioners and some cannot afford to run them especially with the cost of electricity rising. These children are tired not able to enjoy that extra hour of cool sleeping in the morning and fall asleep at school.

From Sunday evening to Thursday night my children do not go to bed beacuse its hot and the light of the sun still comes through the window. It' is 9 and 10 p.m. before you have settle them. They didn't want dinner because it was too hot to eat at five or six.

I hated daylight savings as a child in Victoroa and I now I feel for the children here. They are tired and unlike the adualts not all schools are airconditioned .Our children are expoused to the heat and this extra hour of daylight.. We in the West have some the hottest temperatures in the world and highest rates of skin cancer.

As the children do not have a voice and we should ask them what they think before we burden them with daylight savings. I know how my children feel. They hate it and are counting down the days for it to end.

I don't really understand what the fuss is all about. The amount of day light you have does not change with daylight saving, it remains the same. The only difference is how you use those light hours. If you are a working person getting home at 5.30-6 and still want to have some day light until around 8.30pm so daylight saving is for you. This is why I would vote for day light saving.
