Extended Trading Hours A Possibility? Post by: Dan The Internut 23 June, 2010 - 10:21 AM

It's been going on for years here in Perth, and it's no surprise that the debate of Extended Trading Hours has reared it's ugly head again. What is a surprise though is the fact that the Labor Party have struck an in-principle agreement with the government to allow shops in the metropolitan area to open until 9pm.
The basic premise of the agreement is:
- All shops in the metro area allowed to trade until 9pm weeknights.
- Shops such as Harvey Norman allowed to trade Sundays, but not supermarkets.
- Sunday trade only for the sale of "durable consumer items" such as white goods.
The Government has admitted that the rules around Sunday trading are confusing and work has to the done to fix that.
From what we understand, details of this agreement are expected to be worked out in the coming months, with legislation to be debated in the spring session of State Parliament.
Over to you. Put simply, are you for or against extended trading hours?

I once worked in retail and am glad I got out before trading hours came in. However I still have friends in retail that are not at all happy about it. I worked as a storeperson in a major appliance store and I personally found it physically tiring to work in retail. I think you need a sunday everyweek to spend time with loved ones not working.

I think we need some additional trading hours, perhaps one more late night, but I think 7 day trading is a very bad idea.
Current Retail Figures are appalling and consumers only have X amount to spend so this will just be spread over 7 days but not increase spending. I think the effect on WA retail business will be a disaster.
I think there are some other issues regarding how we will spend our spare time - in shopping malls eating from food halls. Perth is such a beautiful place and we have so many other options. Let's not turn into a total consumer society with massive personal debt and let's enjoy our wonderful city.

Disgraceful that the Government would ignore the results of the last referendum on trading hours where the majority voted NO.

There may be some argument to extend week night trading to 7pm perhaps, but take a look in shopping centres after that time - there aren't many people there and the majority are teens just hanging around. Very few people are actually buying! -

Against it. I was in retail last christmas and the shops were so quiet during christmas trading hours we closed early every night! Also I now many ppl still in retail who don't want to work at night but will be forced to. Really great for the family life and social life of retail employees...i think not!

It's ridiculous that IGA can stay open from 7.00am to 10.00 pm but Coles & Woolies can't.
I don't think other retailers need to stay open longer. -

I think its great! There are so many people working different hours and don't get the opportunity to shop within standard times. People won't be working extra hours- its against the law- Employers will simply be forced to create a functional timetable for staff, and create more employment for others.

Some complaints have been that you don't think the government should make the decision for us- but there is irony in that statement. Just because YOU do not want to shop at night, doesn't mean you should make that decision for the rest of us.
It certainly doesn't hurt to try something new- everyone else around the country manages and they have no more or no less money than we do.
How about we break the Perth stereotype and implement a little harmless change? -

We had a vote and we all said NO...
Why are we asked to vote when the government knows full well that they will change it further down the track ...
They should be ashamed of themselves ..... -

er no we did not ALL SAY NO ! about about joining the 21st century Perth ! for folk who don;t work it's fine but how about giving people choice ??? and you wouldn't work anymore in retail, in fact you would have a more flexible roster ! oh and bring back DLS too !
