Daylight or Day/Night? Post by: Mix 94.5 7 May, 2009 - 2:09 PM
The referendum is almost here. May 16, we're heading to the polls to vote on the referendum. Here's the question they'll be asking in the referendum.
"Are you in favour of daylight saving being introduced in Western Australia by standard time in the State being advanced one hour from the last Sunday in October 2009 until the last Sunday in March 2010 and in similar fashion for each following year?"
- Would you be happy posting this question in the referendum? Should there be more options / stipulations?
- Has the trial changed your vote, either for or against?
- Who do you think will win? The Yes or No vote.

The decision is simple.
It's based on democracy, and the answers to 2 questions.
1) What percentage of the population is awake at 5am? Surely no more than 10%?
2) What percentage of the population is away at 7.30pm? Most people would accept 80%.Why then are we allowing the 10% minority to dictate to the 80%?

That's not democracy as I know it.
The only answer is YES. -

If unsure vote YES. Like the idea but want to tweak the dates we have daylight savings? vote YES, why? because we can tweak something we have, not something we don't !

No, you don't get an extra hour in your life, you won't even live longer just because of daylight savings. Just ask yourself, how many countries on Earth has it or implemented it, despite the daylight has extended or reduce? It's just a waste of effort and energy on all front as 1)Nobody on the other side of the earth will change their timing just for you, even for business, 2) You get the chance to get home while the sun shines (instead of the dark), 3) Business here don't have to adjust their clocks just to open at the same hours, 4) There's much bigger issue to worry why this is actually happening (instead of just debating over adjusting of time), 5) Just a simple adjusting the way your bed is placed can leave you avoiding the early sunshine for a long time. 6) Sunbathing lovers, do need to note that having summer means the strength of the UV rays are the highest, which leads to higher chances of getting skin cancer, acne, melasma, freckles, thus you should avoid the strong sunlight instead of welcoming the slient skin cancer. If you think sunblock works, you need to apply it to your eyes, scalps, bottoms, in fact every single part of your body unprotected from the sun (even sunnies, umbrellas offer only sufficient protection).

Light at 8pm? Unfortunately, daylight savings means daylight at 9-9.30pm...not 8pm (i've checked the watch and it 'sets' 8pm onwards with the latest being almost 9.30pm). No place, save for Antarctica and North Pole region, have sunshine this late.
Family time? Everyone has 24hours to be able to spend for family time. Kids can sleep for 8hours, leaving 16hours to spend with them, If 8hours of work, then 8hours to spend time with them. So, Without daylight savings, you still have 8hours to be able to spend time with them.
"sense"? Maybe non-sense to me.
If you want to change, why not just change the time zone for good instead? save all these trouble of spending the people's taxes just to have a decision on this. If fact, every session for government means money to claim for work purposes. Do you want to spend such money where you have much more important issues on job creation and tax-relief for the struggling family, or use it on charitable purposes, or maybe spend it as education funds for school-going children/teens.You want easiest solution? Change the timezone. Everyone will not have to tune their clock every summer and businesses will not have to worry about having to call when offices are not opened yet.

Well I like day light saving because I have more time to work out in my garden as I start work at 6 am every morning and when I get home at 5pm I still have enough time to do stuff. When my boys were growing up we had daylight saving and I had no problem with getting them to bed because my husband and I were the parents and they just did as they were told that was it . So it will be a big YES for our family even my boys say that they would vote it in.
