Young bands are set to kick some serious butt at the ARIA Awards with the likes of rockers Birds Of Tokyo (pictured above) and Angus & Julia Stone leading this morning's announcement of nominations.

In their final year together Powderfinger have scored four nominations for their No. 1 album Golden Rule in the categories for Best Rock Album, Best Group, Most Popular Australian Album and Most Popular Group.

The 'Most Popular' categories are new to ARIA, where for the first time you'll be able to vote for who you think will win. So if you don't agree with the judges you can have your say!

But it's really all about the young up-and-comers with Birds Of Tokyo, Angus & Julia Stone and Sia leading the field with six nominations apiece.

Of the rockers, Powderfinger will go head-to-head with Temper Trap and Birds Of Tokyo in the Best Group, while Jimmy Barnes and Crowded House will fight it out in the rather "mature" category of Best Adult Contemporary Album.

This year’s ARIA Awards will be presented at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday, November 7. If you want to attend, public tickets to the show are on sale now from the Sydney Opera House. Otherwise, the whole thing will be broadcast live on Channel Ten.
