The Day The World Stood Still Post by: Dan The Internut 8 December, 2010 - 9:42 AM

It really is one of those few moments in life where you'll never forget where you were, the moment you heard that John Lennon's life had been taken too soon.
Ask anyone who was around at the time... everyone has a story on where they were the moment they heard for themselves that the former Beatle and music legend was murdered by crazed fan Mark David Chapman. It's one of those rare times in life where one person's life (and sudden death) literally stopped the world.
Lennon was a poet, a peace activist, a brilliant songwriter, a comedian, a genius. He inspired and aggravated people who actually knew him and those who only knew of him.
Whilst the actual moment he died occurred on December 9 here in Australia, the world marks his anniversary as the day he died in New York. December 8, 1980.
Where were you when you heard the news of John Lennon's death? Leave your tribute for John Lennon.

Not sure that I'd call John 'genius' - yes, he wrote some great songs, so have many other people. I suggest people read Cynthia Lennon's book, and get to know Julian Lennon through his Facebook page, they have many interesting things to say about JL.

Of this day, Julian says " I do not care where people were or what they were doing on the day my father was murdered- don't make this into a sad time for me". -

What a pity to have lost such a great mind. But why do we celebrate his death, let's start celebrating his birth and life. This surely would be a much better tribute to the man and what he stood for.

I was in hospital in Mt Barker resting up while waiting for the arrival of our first child. The doctor had just told me she was in no hurry and after he left I turned on the radio to hear that John Lennon had be shot. For the record our daughter arrived a week later

If ever a moment was missed for the Americans to even discuss gun control they missed it,and all the other times since, well at least they are shooting their own now.,by and large.

He really was a genius and a pioneer. Making revolutions on so many levels and an absolute music master. A huge loss to Yoko and the world . . . to think what music he would have created and the influence he would have had throughout the 80's, 90's and today.

John Lennon was the voice of a generation. He spoke about Peace and Love, all the while showing that he was human. The world lost a wonderful human being that fateful night 30 years ago.
