Sun Sets On Powderfinger Post by: Dan The Internut 23 September, 2010 - 10:05 AM

Powderfinger set Perth alight with a magical show.

The best Spring day we've had in Perth yet proved the omen we thought it might. Tonight's Powderfinger gig might possibly be the best one ever.

The masses formed on possibly one of the most underrated venues in Perth, Supreme Court Gardens, to witness what could be the best warm up act ever. Jet were awesome and rocked the crowd with their calvacade of hits.

Once lights went down and roadies sprung into action, the punters knew that their time to say goodbye to one of Australia's biggest ever bands was nigh. As as the Queensland boys hit the stage, everyone knew that this would be a night for the ages.

"Where do you hide all the ugly people. The gene pool here in Perth is amazing." says Fanning to the adoring crowd... Oh Bernard, you say that to all the crowds.

The band launched into a fairly low key start, the familiar sounds of Love Your Way punctuating the massive marquee that plays host to their three goodbye shows. Lost And Running proved an early crowd favourite, as well as Sunsets, Already Gone and Like A Dog. Hell, with a band like Powderfinger, every song's a crowd favourite.

The band also gave the punters a very nice surprise half way through the show. Not that I'm going to spoil it for you.

"It's Wednesday night, but you people are on fire!" Fanning calls it how it is... maybe the punters were reacting to the fact that this gig was being recorded for "Powderfinger: The Movie" Maybe it was just because this was our chance to say goodbye to Australian music legends?

Either way, the crowd singalong for "My Happiness" was definitely the high point of the night, the crowd even left to their own devices and managing to keep in tune and in time. Amazing stuff.

Fanning reminisced about the bad old days of playing (and getting booed off) at Planet nightclub, before their graduation to bigger (and far better venues) like The Lookout, Claremont Showgrounds and finally, the Supreme Court Gardens. The Powderfinger boys certainly have a love affair with us in the west. Clearly, the feeling was mutual.

After the obligatory encore, the boys closed out with the very fitting "These Days". Although time may have slipped through their hands, the crowd left ecstatic at getting their chance to see an Aussie favourite one last time.

Wednesday was great, bands were great, awesome atmospshere, but in a massive tent, what were they thinking.
All the speakers of which there were not many were in tent and the sound got a bit distorted if you were down the back.
