Rob Thomas spent last night in a studio in Sydney with members of INXS, re-recording a new version of the band’s classic “Never Tear Us Apart”.
The Daily Telegraph in Sydney has reported that the “surviving” members of INXS are recording a covers album of their own greatest hits, using different vocalists for each song.
Thomas, currently on a brief promo visit to Australia to announce his upcoming concert tour here, has made no secret of his admiration of INXS. In fact, he has admitted the song “Meltdown” from his latest solo album, Candlesong, is a “complete rip-off” of “Need You Tonight”.
“When I got on the phone from New York to talk to them about their record, I told them right up front: 'I want to say that I hope you guys don’t mind I completely tried to rip you off',” Thomas said.
During Matchbox Twenty’s last Australian tour, INXS drummer Jon Farriss joined the band on stage during the final show of the tour and bashed out versions of “Never Tear Us Apart” and “Don’t Change”.
Thomas has previously stated his admiration for Michael Hutchence. “He’s one of the greatest frontmen of any rock band, of any band,” Thomas said.
No more details about the INXS album are known at this stage, but some of us won’t be holding our breath.
What do you think? Does the world need an INXS cover record by INXS? [Please watch the Michael Hutchence clip at the top of the story before answering.]
INXS are musicians and want to make music. Sure Michael Hutchence was so awesome and he could never be replaced. The guys just want to honour him with a new twist!
I was at the Wollongong Concert and watched Rob Thomas and Matchbox belt out those tunes with Jon Farris on drums and it was awesome. Bought tears to a lot of people eyes. Truly the best concert experience of my life!
