We're a lucky lot here at Mix 94.5... every now and then we get a very sneaky peek (well, listen) to an exciting new album before it gets released to the world. Today, we got the chance to listen to the much anticipated new release from Red Hot Chili Peppers, I'm With You.

Although we can't share the actual tracks with you, we can at least give you our first impressions.

Track 1 - Monarchy Of Roses
The song (and essentially the album) opens with what sounds like a jam session... all the instruments doing their thing and then BANG... you're in the song and you're hit with that Chili Peppers sound... awesome!

The song continues down this path... from jam like distortion, to clean Chili Peppers, rinse and repeat.

 

Track 2 - Factory Of Faith
Ah, there he is... Flea is certainly one of the most talented and distinctive bass players in the world, and he leads the way on this track... he works so well with Chad Smith, and throw in syncopated guitars from new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and of course, Anthony's lead vocals and you have another great RHCP song.

 

Track 3 - Brendan's Death Story
Just to slow things up, the band chucks an acoustic guitar intro into the Mix... but with a song title like that, you sort of expect nothing less.

 

Track 4 - Ethiopia
Another Flea led track with support from Chad the drummer. One thing that's definitive about this band, they have one of the strongest rhythm sections going around. No question. They hit their straps on this track, and as usual, Chad Smith does his usual thing, taking a 4/4 beat and messing around with it so us air drummers actually have to concentrate when playing along.

 

Track 5 - Annie Wants A Baby
This is a great song... brilliant verse into chorus.

 

Track 6 - Look Around
Now this is what a lot of fans would like to hear... it really sounds like early RHCP. A real collage of different genres, with a bridge that will literally smack you in the face. Great stuff.

 

Track 7 - The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie
You probably don't need us telling you about this song... after all, it's all over radio. And Youtube...

 

Track 8 - Did I Let You Know
Again, an unmistakable RHCP track... great interplay between Anthony and the guitars. And now for something a little different, a horn in the middle, with bongo rythym... Very cool.

 

Track 9 - Goodbye Hooray
This would make a great live track... hearing it, you close your eyes and you're there in the mosh pit... or not :)

 

Track 10 - Happiness Loves Company
This song proves that the band really thought about production on this track. Certain phrasing between Anthony's vocals and Chad's drums proves that they really planned things out in the studio, on this track at least.

 

Track 11 - Police Station
A real melancholic track, that, if nothing else, proves how good musically this band is.

 

Track 12 - Even You Brutus?
A tough vocal on a softer music bed. Interesting contrast.

 

Track 13 - Meet Me At The Corner
Again, another turn you may not have seen coming... RHCP bring an almost jazz type feel to the song (in particular, the guitars)... cool!

 

Track 14 - Dance Dance Dance
It feels like the drums, bass and guitars are doing three different things, yet it works. This track sort of feels like the Kings Of Leon, but that just might be the guitar sounds.

 

All in all... fans and non fans alike are in for a treat... I'm personally an admirer of the band, without being a real fan, and I liked this album, a lot! So it's a no-brainer that true fans of the band are about to lose their everything over this album.

I'm With You is out Saturday, August 27.
