A couple got their shock of their lives when a whale breached and landed straight on top of their boat.

The modern day Moby Dick wasted no time in time smashing their 40ft steel mast as it launched out of the water.

A tourist on a nearby sightseeing boat took this picture of experienced South African skipper Ralph Mothes being dwarfed by the whale.

It would appear in the battle of man v whale, Willy wins every time.

Who's the endangered species?

  I haven't heard how the whale fared - hope it was alright. It certainly ruined the couple's day!

  It is probably a wake up call for the pleasure craft who go seeking the whales during the East Coast Migration. They are magnificent creatures but they are HUGE and I think people forget that they don't know the ins and outs of marine etiquette!

  Much safer to go on one of the licensed whale watch operators and their nice big boats!
